Thursday, April 27th

English Div 4: You listened to Benjamin Button by F Scott Fitzgerald taking notes on story elements. You will be taking those notes and using them to write another compare and contrast paragraph.

Math Div 4: You reviewed how to solve one step algebraic equations and then we worked on solving two step algebraic equations. I am noticing that students who have fluency with their multiplication tables are not having difficulty with these type of problems. Their homework is 15 minutes of review every day. I recommend multiplication.com for that practice. It is pure rote.

When we returned to class we did a reading for information exercise focused on the Crusades. Friday I will be calling on you to present your inquiry questions and reflections.

English Div 5: You finished F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...it ended with him dying; now that is original. We will be analyze Roth's screen play and compare with the short story that inspired it on Friday. You can find the link here.

Math- You were handed back your marked Algebraic Expression Guide poster assignment. You were asked to record it on your mark sheet and calculate your percent. We reviewed expressions and then reviewed how to do 1 step equations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The exercises are linked beside 1 step algebraic equations on this page...remember to scroll down.

Sorry for the delay. I have been getting optical migraines and the worst thing for them is screen time. Hence, my Thursday and Friday absence.

So, yesterday was team photo and school photo day so it was slightly disruptive, but we did the following:

S.S.: A few of you presented your inquiry results. Then, you read a page on the crusades. Your task was to highlight information that answered the questions: Why did they happen? What was the consequence? (Div 3 you did not get to this activity because of the photo time)

S.S.: Tiffany from Squamish Nation presented on indigenous language restoration.

English Div 5: I took inventory of students who published/wrote their stories for deadline bonuses. We will be publishing the remainder on Wednesday; at that time, I will email families that you are getting an incomplete in English until that major assignment is completed. We started a new unit on aging and coming of age.

April 18th

Math: We reviewed how to translate English into Math language (this was a grade 6 introductory topic). I showed you how to practice this skill on this site. You were assigned a poster and given 20 minutes in class to begin it (some of you finished while some of you sat for 20 minutes because you didn't have a pencil). It is due tomorrow and the criteria can be found on the expressions link in Math; just scroll down to assignments.

English Div 4 and 5: We reviewed and took notes on the two most common sentence errors, sentence fragments and run-on sentences. You were given time to draft, edit and proofread your short stories. Tomorrow, you will get lab time. The stories are due on Monday, April 24th.

Social Studies Div 4: We reviewed the rubric for your Inquiry Projects and you self-assessed. I will be assessing your work and referencing your opinion of your work.
We looked at siege machines with a focus on the Trebuchet. You participated in an in-class critical thinking assignment.

Today's sentence: Don't attempt to do this at home...

English: You were given time to draft your Fantasy or Historical Fiction short stories. You worked very well.

You entered those marks into your personal mark book and worked out your percent, so if your parents ask how you are doing in the third term, you are the one to ask. We took notes on Algebraic Expressions and Math Language.

S.S. Division 4: You were given a block to work on your Social Studies. I was available for questions and direction.

Friday, April 7th and Weekend Work

Effort and HonoUr Certificates went home today. Congratulations on a job well done. Everybody in my classes is capable of hard work, the hard work that spells into effort recognition.

Math: This weekend you should be studying for the Math quiz on Monday. We reviewed the main concepts today and you were given time to complete the practice pages as well as your Proportional Thinking Assignment which is due the day of the test (and worth more). Next week we start an algebra review and after getting back your marks you will be updating your marks' record.

English: You were given class time to draft your FANTASY or Historical Fiction story. Both classes were very focused and on task, well done. If you take time to write, I advise working on your draft at home to keep pace with our publishing schedule.

Social Studies projects are due on April 12th so working on those over the weekend is a must.

Real life ratios that are less than pleasing.

Math: You were assigned this task for marks due on Monday. Monday is the Ratio test. You need to be able to tell the difference between a part:part ratio and a part:whole ratio, how to convert ratios to fractions and percent, how to compare ratios and how to solve problems with ratios.

English: You were assigned a short story assignment. You were given time in class to finish the first step: planning (setting, characters, conflict, events, climax and resolution). The story is to be either Historical Fiction or Fantasy. The final copy should be at least one typed page with an illustrated cover. The 6 traits of writing will be assessed.

We had the award ceremonies and because they were run by kids, they were better than they have ever been.

Social Studies Div 3 and 4 - You were to finish off your research on your inquiry question and submit it for marking. Projects will not be accepted without the "evidence" behind them, aka the research.

Math - You recorded your Rate Test mark and calculated your average to date. If you were away, it is your responsibility to meet with me to make up tests and get the marks to enter into your mark sheet. No mark = 0. The mark sheet is an assignment worth 20 marks.

We have a Japanese visitor.
