Don't bring a lunch tomorrow because we will be going to EMCS for a BBQ lunch. There will be vegetarian options for those who do not eat meat. Our plan is to leave after recess and return shortly after lunch for Exploratories. So, Div 5 will have English Block 1 and a S.S. project time Block 2.

This week, May 25th to 29th

Hope you had a great weekend. This is a gentle, but repeated, reminder that you are responsible for any work missed during absences. In other words, if you miss a class, you have to make up the lesson, the practice and the assignments. To do this you can: connect with classmates who were there, ask your teachers for help catching up at lunch or you can use this blog to help you be where you need to be. We are in the last stretch...don't stop working hard now.

Academic Notes:

English: In preparation for the final exam, we will be reviewing sentence fluency through technical writing. Our focus task will be writing instructions. (MND Booklets can be handed in on Monday; this was an extension).

HCE: Party Planning using DARE.

S.S.: You will get two class blocks to work on your plague project; the project is due on June 5th. We will look at the rise of towns and cities in the middle ages. To summarize the main points of the grade 8 SS curriculum and to prepare for the exam, we will be starting a review page.

French: You will review adjectives, the verb etre and how to make a negative statement.

So, we visited the High School and saw a variety of chemical reactions thanks to Mr Baldwin, a well-loved Math and Science teacher at EMCS. Also, we toured the property with leadership students, Our next visit will be on May 28th for a BBQ.

No assigned homework....unless you are behind. Tomorrow, I will issue your English interim marks and it will be on you to fill in the blanks, if they are there.

S.S.: Black Death, not a punk rock band, but a rather nasty plague that tore through Europe changing the population and society. We will also look at celebrations and traditions in the middle ages for a little comic relief.

This week, May 11th to May 15th

Happy Mother's Day to all those important women in your lives. I hope that you are treating them to a restful day.


Academic Notes:

English: We will read a narrative vesion of Shakespeare's Midsummer's Night Dream to introduce the play's story elements. In addition, we will continue to work on our monologues a la Shakespeare. (The Outsiders projects are due tomorrow, May 11th. The monologue drafts are due on Tues. May 12th)

HCE: We will begin a career project that will require you to thoroughly research a career of your choice. Part of that research will involve looking into job futures.

French: We will review the verbs etre and avoir. As well, we will start a French film short movie unit to celebrate the Cannes Film Festival in France.

S.S.: We will investigate Law and the Middle Ages.

This week, May 4th to 8th

Welcome to May.


Academic Notes:

English:
You will be asked to submit your Student Comprehension packs on Monday, May 4th. You should be working on the project for the Outsiders at home as no class time will be provided (this is due on May 11th).
This week we will be starting a Shakespeare unit and will be looking at his play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream". So, we will also be playing around with theatre/film scripts as a part of the unit.

HCE:
We will finish our resumes to potential employers and we will consider how those resumes could be made stronger. As well, we will review child labour law as it applies to you.

S.S.:
We will continue to look at the cost benefit of war with a focus on the Crusades. Later in the week, we will move into the development of law and justice in the middle ages, a very important human need.

French:
You have a grammar test this coming Thursday (Div 2) and Friday (Div 5). Our grammar focus has been prepositions and the verb aller.


Yes, we will discuss you, Mr Shakespeare.
