This Last Day of 2013 at JMS

Well supposedly the fire alarm went off at 4:30pm today. Now it is threatening snow.

Usually I am one to wish for snow, so it is a little bit of a complete about face to wish for rain. If it is a snow day tomorrow, we will reschedule the gift game and talent show for the new year.

Port Renfrew students, I know it is snowing out by you right now and lets hope you make it in tomorrow. Love my Renfrew kids and I want you here tomorrow.

Tomorrow:

Gift Exchange Game -- Bring in your less than 5 dollar, used or regifted gift to take part in this fun game. Some people are using my suggested wrapping paper, newspaper. I am bringing my present...and I think you will all want it. Hee hee.

Talent Show -- Many of you are involved in this year's talent show. I am really looking forward to seeing the incredible talent housed in Divisions 1 and 2. You guys are soo impressive...I better bring my kleenex tomorrow because you do bring a happy tear to eyes.

Post your holiday wishes for a ticket to this week's draw.

Dec. 18th

Things to bring tomorrow:

1. A gift for our class game of "All I want for Christmas is...Your Present". Gifts should be no more than $5.00, if they are purchased new. They can be second hand or re-gifts too. The aim is for everyone to contribute a wrapped gift to the game (newspaper makes a cheap gift wrap BTW).

2. Candy to decorate your Candy House or Shanty ...as it may turn out.

The word today is: "Candy"

This Last Week of School for 2013

This week:

Math: We will be doing a complete review of fraction concepts from when you were introduced to them in grade 3 until last year. Fractions are a challenge for many students, so we will review the concepts again in January to set you up to tackle this year's learning outcome: multiplying and dividing fractions. There will be a review quiz on Thursday morning so that I can see where you are at with your understanding.

Social Studies: We will be looking at Medieval banquets and etiquette. On Thursday afternoon, we will have a potluck Medieval banquet where I would love to dress some of you up in traditional Medieval dress. I am going to, after all, I am the Queen.

Science: We will use microscopes to look at samples of bacteria. We will check in to see how our colonies are doing.

Special Events this Week:

The Banquet Thursday PM: Bring a dish to share for the Medieval banquet. We will be preparing some dishes on site. I will be looking for brave souls to dress in the spirit of the times.

Div 1 and 2 Class Gift Exchange: Friday AM. Wrap and bring a present for a class game of "All I Want For Christmas is...Your Present". Your present can be: second hand, re-gifted, humourous, something everybody is going to want, something nobody would want (no wrapping up your little brother or sister because I think your parents might want to keep them). I am going to buy some...interesting gifts to throw into the pot.

Today's entry: Post your holiday plans in the comment section for an entry for this week's bigger than usual prize.

Dec 12th

Tektoria tomorrow. We leave at 10:00. Two students from the Mindstorm Robotics Club will be giving us a demo first block. They program robots to follow predetermined circuits. EMCS hopes to develop a upper level robotics club for more advanced programmers and so we are looking to recruit interested students.

If you didn't manage to bring home your form, there is a copy for printing on the parents' page or your parent can email me permission.

Today's phrase is: "Nerds do inherit the Earth".

Dec. 11

Already so many donations to our food drive. Thank you so much and keep them coming. Mr. Bedard is giving away prizes for specialty items every day. If I were you, I would loudly announce the item you are bringing in to Mr Bedard in the morning so that he may mention yours on the announcement for a prize. You know I love prizes!

Division 1, your parents would be so proud of you. You were very gentle, mature and helpful with a very young group of little buddies from John Muir's Kindie class. All of you were so adorable, I almost had one of my boo hoo moments. ;-)

Division 2, I am looking at securing a group from Sooke Elementary for you. I really want to see you working with some of the little ones.

A reminder that we are going on a Field Trip this Friday and your parents/guardians need to give you permission to go. If you aren't going, class is not in session at the school blocks 3-5; the classes will be at Tectoria in Victoria.

Post the name of a computer language in the comments for an entry.

Dec. 10

Bring in your non perishable food donations tomorrow.
You know that I am competitive; I want our divisions to bring in the most donations. I want to be known for how much we care. The winter season is wonderful and festive, but if your family doesn't have enough to eat, it is hardly anything close. Let's be part of their solution.

Type what you are going to bring in tomorrow in the comments box for an entry.

Tomorrow, Div 1 is hosting their little buddies from John Muir tomorrow. The kindies will craft with us and snack with us before heading back to John Muir.

Little kidlets come to visit tomorrow.

Dec. 9th

Well, here I am, late with my homework again. ;-) Sorry for the late post but I was lucky enough to watch our school band and some very talented vocalists deliver some awesome performances at the Imagine Concert. Well done: Elizabeth, Julia, Nick M., Nathan Q., Madeline B.and Lilia E.. You are very talented and entertaining to boot!

Keep those permission forms coming in folks. I will nag you for them tomorrow :-) The word is NAG. Hee hee.

This Week, December 9 to 13th

This week is Computer Science Education Week and we will be engaging in activities that explore computer language and computer science sector jobs. On Friday, we will go to Victoria for Tectoria, a computer science expo.

I read your journal entries over the weekend. A word and the word for the day: impressive.

Dec 5th

Well, so the virus that was replicating in my throat cells has gone crazy and my immune system needs a day to squash it. Mr Horner will be in for the day.

It starts with a computer block in the mini lab to write your journal entry documenting your experience with the Vikings. Then you will have HCE. After that you will be writing the Integers, Order of Operations Quiz. Fourth block, you will get your Bacteria Lab Write Up started. Finally, we end off with a presentation from the Justice Institute. Pay close attention, if you plan on career in the area of law.

If it snows heavily, please tune into 1070 AM Radio. There is no secret word today. All your entries are in the treasure box ready to be drawn. M.G. in Div 1, please tell Mr. Horner put in your 5 entries. :-)

Dec. 4th

Keep those permission forms coming in folks. Copies of forms are available on the homework board and on the parents' links.

I am really impressed by a number of you and how your work has improved. You have made an obvious effort to dial it up for the second term and I am impressed. Keep it up.

Now for 5 entries today, you must publish a comment that answers this question:

Where are the most Bacteria located in JMS? (I know that you have 10:1 Bacteria to Human cells, but this is regards to surfaces around the school) Be sure to initial your comment, if your post is anonymous (BTW I adjusted my settings so you can post this way).

Bring in those permission forms folks (Ski Form, Techtoria, Camp Form).

Some of you are coming dressed for Spring; remember to dress for the weather!

Congratulations to Division 1 who won the pizza party for bringing in the most change for Diabetes. Biggest winner here is the charity. So thank you to all who donated, it is a great cause.

Bring in your TECHTORIA FIELDTRIP NOTICE tomorrow. There is a copy on the parents' link.

Today's word is: "Pizza"

It won't be this kind of pizza party...whatever this is??????

This Week Dec 2nd to 6th

It is December; can you believe it?

Things to bring in tomorrow:

1. Your signed permission form for our Techtoria Field Trip December 13th (extra copies available in class and I will scan one for the parents' page);
2. Your change for Diabetes (tomorrow is the LAST day);
3. Your camp permission form ( I am missing 8)
4. Your smiles.

That word "snow" has started to be used in forecasts. The superintendent has reminded us that if there is a situation where there is significant snowfall, school closures will be announced on CFAX 1070 in the morning. Bottom line is safety; if you can't get to school safely, the school will be closed down. I was going to make a joke about Islanders and driving in snow, but I stopped myself ;-)

BUT, it seems pretty warm to me and I think we might not be dealing with that one for a while if at all.
Secret word: "Storm"
