A busy week for us ahead.

Photo Day is this Wednesday the 20th. Don't forget your comb.

This Thursday is Fox Fest in the morning and the Terry Fox Run in the afternoon. You will be learning social responsibility and rallying for a cause. Certainly, cancer research and Terry's legacy is a good cause to start off with. You are encouraged to bring a Toony for Terry this week.

Also, this Thursday is Meet the Teacher Night. We will be in our classrooms from 6:30 - 7:15. All parents and teachers will be invited to come to the gym after 7:15.

Here is a brief summary of what I hope to achieve in my courses this week in the face of  Photo and Terry's Day:

Math: We will continue to work with improving fluency with basic facts and number sense. In preparation for learning Pythagorean Theorem, we will be taking a look at Area and Perimeter. Practice sets will be done in class. If students want to explore the topic further, I recommend Khan Academy's free site for lessons, practice sets and performance tracking. Emphasis on the free.

English: This week we will continue to read Lord of the Flies and we will be focusing on character development. Through this study, we will look at how Golding masterfully uses words like descriptive adjectives to bring his characters to life so to speak. We will be looking at adjective use and word order as a part of this focus.

Social Studies: We will be distinguishing between primary and secondary sources of historical information. Students will investigate the pros and cons of each type of information source. They will be assigned a project by the end of this week that entails looking into the primary and secondary sources of personal history. Some students have wanted privacy around this in the past and the assignment is very adaptable to accommodate for this, if need be. I want kids to have fun with it and learn something in the process.

And here is Mrs Abell's notes on the week for her courses. Check out her blog linked on the right hand side of this page for updates daily throughout the week:
French
This week will involve students sharing previous experiences (if any, none is needed) with French as a Second Language. We will look at a course outline and make some decisions based on student interest. This week's focus will be on the comparison of English and French. Students will be surprised by how much they actually already know!

Science
We have been working on setting up an interactive Science notebook up until now. This week, we will focus on what it takes to be a scientist and what qualities are seen in each letter of the grading system that we currently use for assessment (A, B, C+, C, C- and I). Homework was given last week concerning the components of an interactive notebook (you may have noticed your child colour a grid of sorts). This is due on Wednesday if it is not already complete. I invite you to ask your child about what is involved in an interactive notebook.

As always, if you have any questions about the week, please do not hesitate to email us. We believe that open communication is key to an effective learning community :-) Today's word is a name: Terry
